Data and Information Management Council

Data Governance

Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) recognizes that integrity in all information assets is vital to the university’s success, and as such, these assets must be maintained in a manner that supports the university’s mission. In furtherance of this imperative, a policy establishes and outlines the university’s data and information governance program and the core roles and responsibilities for individuals participating in the university data and information lifecycle.

Virginia Commonwealth University uses various complex information systems to conduct its business operations and academic affairs. These systems consist of large administrative Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems as well as a wide spectrum of educational and business-specific systems (Student Housing, Sponsored Research Administration, Development and Alumni Relations, etc.). The institutional data within these systems and institutional information that is derived from these systems are strategic assets of the university.

Updates on current projects

In-progress Project

1) Build a data warehouse to support a data domain (to be determined as a result of feedback from VCU community)

Completed Projects as of March 2020

1) Launched the Dashboard Portal. The dashboard portal consists of a one-stop space for dashboards developed by subject matter experts. The inclusion of dashboards in the portal will be approved by the council after it meets a list of criteria.

2) Create a Data Steward resources webpage. The resources are to be considered a toolkit for data stewards, data custodians, and data trustees for reference and adherence. Education and training are important goals for the council in order to mitigate data security risks.
