The Langston Center for Innovation in Quality and Safety will host the Bresenoff-Feierstein Lecture Series 2018-2019:

June 14, 2018 at the VCU School of Nursing in the Younger Auditorium - room 1009, 11:00 to 12:00 PM - Lecture; 12:00 to 1:00 PM - Lunch

Dr. Tom Ahrens, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, research scientist, Barnes Jewish Hospital

The author of five books and over 100 papers, Ahrens is a renowned clinical scholar, scientist and entrepreneur. He has received numerous awards and recognitions, including being selected as an Edge Runner by the American Academy of Nursing. Ahrens partnered with renowned educator Patricia Benner on a product called NovEx and now owns a company, Viven, which develops software and content designed to foster behavioral change in patients. His lecture will address how entrepreneurism supports the aims of professional nursing practice and how to bring an idea to practice and become scalable for widespread replication, using exemplars from his own work.

Garret Westlake, Ph.D., Executive Director of the VCU DaVinci Center will speak on "Cross-disciplinary Collaboration: At the Nexus of Innovation and Innovation Education." His presentation will address the opportunities and breakthroughs through interprofessional collaboratives. Dr. Westlake's career as an academic and entrepreneur is defined by his imaginative use of technology, and weaving the disciplines to solve critical social challenges. A lifelong advocate for individuals with disabilities, Westlake conducted early work that involved the examination of connectionist networks to model and intervene in the treatment of dyslexia; further research links the design and delivery of biofeedback training to support individuals on the autism spectrum.
