Friends of VCU Music, the Music Department’s annual fund, was founded in 2000 to provide support for scholarships and educational programs in the Department of Music.

The Jazz Students Fund began with a generous gift from Jamey Aebersold, founder of Jamey Aebersold Jazz, Inc., that produces the world-renowned Aebersold Play-Along recordings.
The fund helps advance the careers of future jazz musicians by providing scholarships, equipment and travel funding for students and ensembles and covers fees associated with visiting artists.
Gifts from the Jazz Students Fund support the VCU Jazz Studies Student Grant program, established to encourage original research or creative work under supervision of a faculty member. All degree-seeking Jazz Studies students at VCU are eligible.

The Jesùs Silva Merit Scholarship Fund was established in 1991 to assist talented guitarists and recognize excellence among the students in VCU’s Department of Music.
About Jesùs Silva
Jesùs Silva, world-renowned guitar virtuoso and teacher, was musician artist-in-residence at VCU from 1979 to 1982. A protégé of Andrès Segovia for more than 50 years, Silva was a graduate of the National Conservatory of Mexico and taught at the National Conservatory, the University of Mexico, the Brooklyn Music School and the North Carolina School of the Arts. Many important composers have dedicated works to him, including Manuel M. Ponce, Blas Galindo, Eduardo Hernandez Moncada and Luìs Sandi. Silva was also a distinguished poet, renowned in his native Mexico for two books — “Corazòn de Bruma” and “Rio de Espigas.” His “Ten Preludes for Guitar” was published by Columbia Music in 1992.
VCUarts Music has presented the top chamber music performers in the world to Richmond audiences for more than thirty years. The Mary Anne Rennolds Chamber Concerts Series, originally founded as the Terrace Concerts, debuted in 1983 in partnership with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Today, the series is named in honor of Mary Anne Rennolds, one of Richmond’s greatest music patrons. A fund was established in her memory to present chamber music events in Richmond.
